Reducing the Amount of Available Mercury Worldwide
Today there is worldwide concern over the amount of elemental mercury available and its use, especially in developing nations where environmental controls are lacking. In response to these concerns, Bethlehem Apparatus has developed a unique process that allows for the retirement of elemental mercury from future use by stabilizing it into a form that is safe for land disposal.
Bethlehem Apparatus’ patented sulfide treatment technology (U.S. Patent No. 7,691,361 and 8,501,107) combines mercury and sulfur in specially designed retorts at high temperatures. The process yields a mercury sulfide that passes the TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) leach tests for elemental mercury disposal. Currently this sulfide is being exported to Canada for land disposal. In addition, Bethlehem is working with the US EPA to obtain approval for our treatment technology for use in the United States.
We offer:
- Capacity to retire 300 to 1,000 tons of mercury per year
- Approval for landfill disposal in Canada (U.S. disposal approval pending)
- Patented process meets government and environmental regulations
